About the OCSA (English)
A Brief Introduction to the Ontario Chinese Seniors Association
The Ontario Chinese Seniors Association (OCSA) was founded in August 2011. It is a non-profit organization officially registered in Ontario, Canada. Its members are Chinese seniors coming from different parts of the world. The mission of OCSA is to help Ontario Chinese seniors improving their health and welfare. OCSA is Ontario Chinese seniors' own organization.
Since 2012, OCSA has been rapidly growing from around 40 members to 1300 members. It has become one of the organizations possessing the greatest membership in the Greater Toronto Area. The members are mainly distributed in city of Toronto and the GTA. To facilitate members' participation and cater to their varying interests and needs, the original two chapters have been increased to seven. The interests served include chorus, photography, paper arts and so on.
According to incomplete statistics, since 2013 OCSA's large scale activities have occurred twice a year with about 500 members taking part in each one. Each of the seven chapters organizes two activities per week in average. Each year, 500-700 activities have been organized and the participation has reached 20,000 to 40,000 accumulatively. OCSA organizes more activities than other senior organizations in the GTA.
OCSA has flourished for over five years as more and more Ontario Chinese seniors have gathered under the Association's flag. It has developed various rich and colourful activities such as all kinds of dancing, singing, Taiji, and training classes in English, computer and photography. It also holds various kinds of health and nourishment seminars, organizes short trips and travel to various parts of the world. These have changed tremendously seniors' lonely life. They make more and more new friends. They have emerged with more open and clear, optimistic and happy mentalities. Many members have said sincerely, "The Association is our second home."
At the same time, we also have organized members to take part in different kinds of activities to strive for seniors' legal rights and interests. In a short time since the Association was founded in 2012, we have petitioned the TTC to allow all the seniors to travel free during off-peak periods or receiving a discounted price on monthly passes. To this end, we have collected 5000 signatures from people of different ages and races. We have also received support from some MPs, MPPs and City Councillors respectively. We have also cooperated with the TTCRiders to take part in discussions of the City's annual budget meetings and the TTC public consulting meetings.
OCSA's activities and achievements have gained extensive attention from all three levels of governments and from the society at large. We have received congratulatory letters and greetings from, among others, the Prime Minister, the Consul General of Toronto's Chinese Consulate General, the Federal Seniors Affair's Minister, some MPs, MPPs and City Councillors, and the Toronto Public Housing Corporation. Some of them have even personally attended our meetings to express their support and congratulations. OCSA has also received financial support from New Horizon Senior Program Funding, Ontario Seniors Funding, Woodgreen Community Funding, as well as some MPs, MPPs, and City Councillors, and many community organizations and friends from businesses. Chinese language television stations and newspapers, and English language media have publicized OCSA through many interviews and reports.
Under the untiring efforts of the first board of directors headed by Mr. Xie Zixing, the association has become the link between the harmonious, active and healthy elderly community composed of chinese ekders and the goverments at all levels in Greater Toronto .In April 2018, the association elected a new board of directors with Ms. Xu Yajuan as the new chair.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the three levels of governments, people from all walks of society, media and all friends of seniors. We also look forward to the continuous support, from governments, various groups of our society, media and senior friends. We will serve seniors better for their health, happiness and good fortune.
